I'm Murph

Senior Editor, Insightful Accountant  |  Advanced Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor

I spent more than 30 years consulting on QuickBooks, starting with what I have every reason to believe was the first copy sold in Oklahoma City. I am retired from active practice now. These days I run the day-to-day technical content at Insightful Accountant, host QB Talks, and administer the Top Advisor Awards that recognize the best ProAdvisors in this industry.

The story

About me

The day QuickBooks went on sale, I bought a copy. I have every reason to believe it was the first one sold in Oklahoma City. I have been working in it ever since, which is longer than most of the people reading me have been certified on it.

That became a hands-on consulting practice across an eight state area, plus remote clients around the country and in three foreign countries. About 60 percent of that work was major integrations, meaning manufacturing, inventory, e-commerce and EDI. Another 35 percent was data services, the file analysis and repair work people called me about when something had gone badly wrong.

For years I was the anchor of the National Advisor Network's online forum, now the Woodard forum, and won its Online MVP award three years running. I served as Technical Editor on Business Analysis with QuickBooks for Wiley Publishing.

I am retired from active practice now, but I did not retire from the work. I still spend my days in this software, and I still get the same questions I have been answering for four decades. The only difference is that now I write the answers down for everybody instead of billing one client at a time.
